A Letter from Senator Warren- Genesis Healthcare Top Officials Receive Millions of Dollars in Bonuses during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Date: June 30, 2021

A letter written on January 27th, 2021 by Senator Elizabeth Warren discusses the millions of dollars in bonuses given to recently retired Genesis Healthcare CEO, George Hager Jr., as well as many other top executives during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this letter, Senator Warren is addressing Genesis Healthcare’s current CEO, Robert Fish, to find out why these large bonuses were necessary to dole out while Genesis Healthcare’s facilities suffered greatly as many residents became infected with and died from Covid-19. In addition, the letter says that Genesis Healthcare’s facilities were not given an adequate supply of protective gear to stay safe during the pandemic. Because of Genesis Healthcare’s failed leadership, the vulnerable, elderly populations residing in these facilities were put at risk of contracting the virus. The letter mentions that “in the first nine months of 2020, Genesis stated that it received “$254  million in federal aid relief tied to the pandemic.” This amount consisted of $186 million in CARES Act grants. However, despite Hager receiving more than 6 million dollars in bonuses, the letter mentions that Mr. Hager suggested the federal funding was not adequate enough to support the company’s pandemic expenses.

Senator Warren explicitly mentions in her letter that CARES Act funding “should not be used to line the pockets of company executives who fail to address the public health threats from the pandemic.” In this situation, I believe Genesis Healthcare Inc. put its greedy needs over the health of its residents and employees. Healthcare and other skilled nursing corporations should not be depriving at-risk populations of proper care and resources, especially during these scary and unprecedented times.
