The Pittsburgh Post Gazette just reported that the Alleghany Board of Commissioners voted 9–5 to lease the 1180 acre Deer Lake Park for non-surface natural gas drilling.  The matter has been the subject of several very contentious public meeting.  The Commission needed to weigh all of the hot button issued associated with fracking, especially considering the nature of the land being leased.  The money involved is significant; $4.7 million lease payment and potential royalties of $50 million.  In the end, the majority felt that the assurances given by the natural gas drilling company Range Resources and the money involved outweighed the environmental and other concerns.
