In a landmark study authorized by the drilling industry and released today, the Department of Energy found no evidence of water pollution caused by fracking. The study results indicate that the chemicals utilized in the fracking process do not migrate upward into the water aquifer. Fracking is conducted over 5000 feet under the surface. Opponents feared that the chemicals would travel up from the ground and pollute well water. The detailed study and findings found this not to be the case. It appears that early cases of well water pollution were caused by improper drilling methods while transcending through the aquifer at 200 to 600 feet. Newer and safer drilling techniques have all but eliminated this concern.
