Back-to-school season is officially here! Students are heading back into the classroom, which means hectic morning and afternoon commutes for drivers. The National Safety Council offers all the precautionary driving tips you need to know in order to stay safe while traveling on the roads.

According to the National Safety Council, it is of utmost importance that drivers are aware of their surroundings at all times, especially in school zones, because you never know if a child is going to bolt across the street. Next, always make sure to stop at pedestrian crosswalks and obey the speed limit. Do not park in unauthorized zones or defy a police officer or crossing guard’s orders when directing traffic. When a school bus is dropping off students or picking up students, make sure to stop and keep your vehicle at a ten-foot distance between students. The National Safety Council reports that the majority of school students in the age bracket of four to seven years old lose their lives in school bus accidents due to drivers not stopping their vehicles during bus pickups and drop-offs.

The National Safety Council also recommends not double parking your car, dropping your students off at the appropriate school pick-up and drop-off locations, and not beeping your horn at students walking on a designated crosswalk.
