Driving a motorcycle is an enjoyable activity for many, but it is no easy task. Motorcyclists should be informed of proper motorcycle driving procedures and precautions to take when traveling on the road in order to reduce the risk of having a dangerous accident that can, oftentimes, be fatal. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recommends the following driving safety tips for motorcyclists: do not drink and drive, always follow the speed limit, inspect your motorcycle to make sure it is functioning properly before riding, attend “PennDOT’s Driving Safety Program”, be alert when driving in snowy or rainy weather and be on the look-out for potholes in the road. Most importantly, always wear your helmet! According to the Pennsylvania Helmet Law, motorcyclists must wear a helmet if they do not meet the following conditions: the driver is under 21 years of age, the driver has not completed a driving safety course approved by PennDOT, the driver has not had their motorcycle license for “two full calendar years, and the driver has only obtained a motorcycle learner’s permit.” Also, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation mentions that by Pennsylvania law all motorcyclists and passengers are required to wear eye gear for protection when driving on the road unless operating a “motorized pedal cycle” or “three-wheeled motorcycle.”
Motorcyclists are strongly encouraged by Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation to learn about PennDOT’s campaign, “Live Free Ride Alive Program”, which promotes motorcycle driving safety. Drivers can follow this campaign on major social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, etc.
Additionally, it is important that non-motorcycle drivers are cautious and take all necessary driving safety precautions on the road, and are aware of traveling motorcyclists.
