Researchers are seeking FDA approval after testing a new antibiotic, Geopotidacin, which has demonstrated positive effects on treating urinary tract infections. McKnight’s author, Alicia Lasek, writes that this antibiotic fights against bacteria that commonly lead to UTIs, E. coli, and S. saprophyticus.
Nitrofurantoin is currently the antibiotic that is most prevalently used by nursing homes to treat UTIs. However, testing has shown Geopotidacin to be just as effective as Nitrofurantoin. Lasek says that once granted approval by the FDA, the pharmaceutical company, GSK, strongly believes that Geopotidacin will be the newest antibiotic in twenty years to treat UTI which is a huge deal for elderly nursing home residents. It is reported that women over the age of sixty-five have a twenty-percent risk of contracting a UTI and have a strong chance of re-infection. Antibiotics in the present-day pharmaceutical market do not have a strong effect on treating patients with E. coli. This is because E. coli has built up a tolerance to these medications.
If Geopotidacin is approved, patients with UTIs would have a wider variety of prescription UTI medications available to them. Additionally, the author interviewed Dr. Amesh Adalja who feels Geopotidacin will open the door for the creation of other antibiotics of this kind.
