DLP Fights for Victims of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect- McKnight’s Long-Term Care News reports: “New CMS guidance nudges nursing homes to offer COVID shots timely treatments”

CMS guidance nudges nursing homes to offer COVID shots
Date: December 22, 2022

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have announced updated instructions regarding COVID-19 vaccines and treatments according to McKnight’s Long-Term Care News author, Alicia Lasek. CMS feels it is crucial to keep the mild symptoms of COVID positive nursing home residents at bay. Lasek writes that a Quality and Safety (QSO) memo highlights the importance of preventing severe symptoms as well as encourages facilities to treat COVID-19 cases with safe monoclonal antibody drugs.

The percentage of nursing home residents who have received recent COVID-19 booster shots remains low at 44%. CMS says that many facilities have failed to inform residents about receiving the most recent COVID-19 booster shot. However, CMS cautions facilities that they will keep a close eye on the number of COVID-19 resident cases.

Lasek mentions that this CMS announcement coincided with the Biden Administration’s plan to urge all Americans who are eligible to receive the new COVID-19 booster shot. In an effort to increase COVID-19 booster shot numbers in nursing homes, CMS will meet with ‘Quality Improvement Organizations” to establish vaccine clinics in these facilities. However, the presidents of the AHCA/NCAL and LeadingAge remain hopeful that COVID-19 booster numbers can rise in nursing homes and long-term care facilities with the help of the government and healthcare professionals.
