Executive Order in Place with Intentions to Improve Quality of Nursing Home Care… But Does Punishing Providers Punish Residents?

Executive Order in Place with Intentions to Improve Quality of Nursing Home Care
Date: May 2, 2023

There has been recent news of an executive order put in place by President Joe Biden. The intention of this order is to improve long-term care and the quality of care provided. It is crucial to strengthen the weakened workplace in the nursing home industry. Biden stated that “right now, the cost of care is too high for seniors in nursing homes” and “the pay for care workers is too low”. The mix of these two factors leads to poor retention within the nursing home industry.

For the greater good of the economy and the people, it is important to consider how to benefit working families, communities, and caregivers. Although support was given to Biden for his care, the CEO of Leading Age questioned how adequate these solutions were for long-term care providers. She stated that this executive order seemed to favor support for home and community-based care over providing aid to nursing home facilities. Providers seem to be punished for staffing shortages rather than receiving help to fix the issue.

If aid is continuously lacking for nursing home facilities, cases of negligence and abuse will continue to be an ongoing concern for families and loved ones of those who reside in long-term care facilities. By punishing providers, we are punishing residents and encouraging this unfair and poor quality of treatment. By providing funds and assistance to nursing home providers, we are fighting against cases of neglect and abuse. Dougherty Leventhal and Price’s goals align with these values. Our main goal is to ensure nursing home residents are receiving appropriate, high-quality care.
