Governor Elect Tom Wolf Makes DEP and DCNR Appointments

Date: January 15, 2015

The natural gas industry, fracking and a statewide severance tax all became significant issues during the recent contest for Governor of Pennsylvania.  Current Governor Tom Corbett was always seen as a pro natural gas drilling executive during his term in office.  Governor elect Tom Wolf successfully portrayed the Governor as a friend of everything natural gas drillers stood for and requested.

Governor elect Tom Wolf never came out as an anti fracking advocate similar to Governor Cuomo in New York State.  Instead, Mr. Wolf acquiesced that fracking in Pennsylvania was here to stay.  Mr. Wolf ran on a platform of adequately regulating and overseeing the industry in both an economic and environmentally friendly fashion.  Mr. Wolf also championed a fair natural gas severance tax as exists in every other state hosting the natural gas and oil industry.  Mr. Wolf’s platform seemed to resonate with a broad spectrum of the electorate.

Yesterday Mr. Wolf acted on his promise to properly regulate the natural gas industry in Pennsylvania by appointing what industry insiders consider “liberal” and anti-gas drilling individuals to Cabinet positions.  Mr. Wolf appointed John Quigley to head the Department of Environmental Protection or DEP.  He followed up this appointment with the naming of Cindy Dunn to head the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.  Both appointments were praised by environmental groups.
