Hundreds of US nursing homes face penalties for failing to report staffing data to the Medicare & Medicaid Centers properly. About 5% of nursing homes face these penalties from errors in correctly reporting audit verifications, registered nurse hours, and turnover. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) created strict guidelines and penalties in suit last April as part of their 5-star rating system to encourage error-free payroll data.
The data showed that over 800 nursing homes noticed their staffing rates drop 1 star because of failures to report data accurately. A healthcare consultant, Melissa Brown, told McKnight’s LTC News about the situation. “This means you need your most skilled person handling staffing file submissions; CMS isn’t playing around—human error can significantly impact your star rating.” The penalty structure has been updated to align with more patient-driven models to benefit those in nursing homes and care facilities. The updates include failing to submit staffing data, reporting four or more days in a quarter without proper RN staffing, and failing a CMS audit verification for staffing data. Aside from the 800 facilities that got a low star rating for their reasons, there were also more nursing homes penalized for inaccurate data and administrator turnover. Facilitators recommend that all nursing homes identify their missing work hours and be aware of the CMS updates for nursing home residents’ and staff’s health and safety. If you know of someone who has been neglected or injured while a resident of a nursing home or long-term care facility, have them contact the lawyers at DLP, who have been representing nursing home abuse victims for over forty years. We at DLP Law Firm can protect you against nursing home-related issues.
