The state officials and Democrats in Congress are working to limit the new Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) access to critical government systems such as Medicare and Medicaid payment programs. A US district court judge has temporarily stopped DOGE’s access to the treasury system of information. In agreement with 19 state attorney generals, the judge argued that the head of DOGE, Elon Musk, should not have access to this information. Letitia James, the NY attorney general on the case, is warning that this unrestricted access could allow Musk to block federal funds for essential services. Furthermore, in this case, the Trump administration is appealing this rule.
DOGE’s involvement in Medicare and Medicaid Centers has raised concerns, and the agency that oversees payments for most nursing homes in the US has had its Medicaid payment system off since the beginning of Trump’s term. With that, health and human services have been asked to categorize their employees based on their importance, which suggests layoffs could occur. This could negatively impact nursing homes and affect the residents’ care. This could affect nursing homes and healthcare centers’ regulations and funding, especially as a $75 million nursing recruitment program is at risk.
Since DOGE came into play, regulatory actions and updates, including public healthcare data, have been frozen. It has not been confirmed if DOGE accessed this information, but with healthcare information at risk, it needs to be available again soon to the database. Democrats in Congress have demanded an urgent review into why and how DOGE was given access and are arguing that non-government political powers should not be allowed to handle such important financial and personal healthcare data. This situation causes worry to healthcare centers and everyone involved, including the staff and patients. It is essential that anyone affected can rely on their information to be safe, and that is unfortunately up in the air in this case.
