Pa. Natural Gas Update From DLP: Cracker Plant Has Life!

Several years ago Pennsylvania government officials were all smiles announcing the possible construction of a multi-billion dollar ethane cracker plant in Monaca, Beaver County .   Royal Dutch Shell was identified as the developer.  A large track of land was placed under contract subject to many contingencies.  Tax breaks were dolled out in Harrisburg.  All very exciting news, and then—-nothing.

That all changed yesterday as reported this morning by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.  Shell held a two hour public meeting to discuss air quality plans for the new plant.  The mostly pro=plant audience heard from various experts detailing air quality safety and other issues.

The meeting took many observers by surprise.  Over the past several years it appeared that cracker plants in Ohio and West Virginia, along with the steep drop in natural gas and oil prices had killed the Beaver County project.  That all changed yesterday and it now appears that the project is back on track.  This is good news for the Pennsylvania economy.  Experts predict multiple spinoff projects statewide if the plant is constructed.
