Teen Drinking During Proms and Graduations
Every Spring high school seniors in Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) look forward to celebrating the end of their high school careers at two milestone events, their prom and their graduation night. Unfortunately, as joyous and rewarding as these two events are in all of our memories, we also remember these days as days when we lost some of NEPA’s “youngest and brightest”. Why? Because many high school students in this area celebrating their prom night and their graduation night choose to drink alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a car. When that happens, tragedy often does and will result.
Prom and Graduation Celebrations Don’t Mix With Alcohol
At Dougherty, Leventhal & Price, LLP, (DLP) our attorneys have seen far too often how drinking and driving causes serious and often times fatal injuries, and destroys lives. After drunk driving crashes occur, the victims or their families often call us for help. As we approach this year’s prom and graduation season, DLP would like to remind parents to make sure their children are not driving after consuming alcohol, and to make sure they are not getting into a vehicle with a driver who may have. Parents, don’t assume your children are safe. Please talk to them and remind them about the dangers of drinking and driving. As the parent of high school and college age children myself, I recommend that you advise your child(ren) to contact you for a ride whenever alcohol may be an issue regardless of the time, their condition or circumstance. The only priority at that time is to get them home safe. You can discuss and decide the need for any discipline the next morning.
Our children are our future. We have great schools in NEPA who have educated our children very well. Let’s do everything we can to make sure that our kids are able to follow their dreams. Some have chosen to go to college. Some have chosen the military. Others chose a trade or vocational school. Regardless, they all have unique talents and abilities and they all have a bright and promising future. Don’t let alcohol ruin their dreams or yours this prom and graduation season.
