The primary election will be held throughout Pennsylvania today. The most watched contest is the fight for the Democratic Governor nomination and a chance to square off against Governor Corbett in the fall general election.
Tom Wolf, the relatively unknown candidate from York County is a heavy favorite in the final polls. His three opponents have been playing catch-up since the early spring when Wolf launched a mostly self funded media blitz introducing himself and his family to the public. If the polls are correct it appears that Democratic voters liked what they saw and will nominate Wolf to run against Governor Corbett. Governor Corbett seems to agree and has already launched negative ads aimed at Mr. Wolf.
Wolf, as well as his opponents, supports a fair severance tax on natural gas drilling. This tax would replace the “impact fee” tax currently imposed. Recently there has been a groundswell of support for a severance tax among many Republican lawmakers. Whether such a tax could ever get approval in Harrisburg is yet to be seen!!
