Tractor Trailer Companies Face Employment Challenges: Public Safety at Risk?

We all know that truck drivers and trucking companies are an integral and important part of our economy and daily lives.  Truckers work hard to deliver products to market every day.  Unfortunately, the trucking industry is facing enormous challenges that threaten the safety of highway using public.

Recent studies estimate that there is a great shortage of truck drivers in our country.  Some estimates place the number of truck driver openings at least 60,000.  This shortage of qualified drivers has created tremendous stress in the industry.  On a positive note for hard working truckers, wages and contracts have increased due to market conditions.  Walmart recently announced that it is increasing pay to $80,000 per year.  On the negative side, the shortage has put a lot of pressure on trucking companies to hire some drivers that would not be hired but for the extraordinary need.  Recently our firm experienced a bus accident case where the bus company hired a driver with over 25 driving violations.  We also are representing the family of a deceased trucker negligently struck by a 78 year old truck driver.  The accident occurred in July, 2018.  In the fall of 2018 we learned that this same truck driver was hired by a different trucking company and killed 2 more people out in Ohio.  But for the shortage of truckers would this driver been on the road?

Along with lowering truck company hiring standards, the truck driver shortage has put tremendous stress on truckers to work longer hours and push the envelope in terms of hours driven and trips made MANY TIMES IN VIOLATION OF Federal and State laws governing trucking.  This pressure to deliver results in sleep deprived truckers creating dangers on the highway resulting in terrible accidents.  Innocent victims suffer the consequences.
